VPL-City-Archives-First-Ambulance-1892

First Ambulance in Vancouver, 1892:

Vancouver was small, its scattered population about 15,000. In earliest days, injured or ailing were moved by boat, wheel barrow, express wagon or horse drawn cab. The City Hospital, a wooden building on Beatty Street, had fifty beds, St. Paul's on Burrard Street and St. Luke's, a private one on Powell, all wood buildings, provided more. Medical practitioners numbered about twenty-five.

The first ambulance, of simple design, was built by Thos. Lobb, horseshoer, blacksmith, who also repaired vehicles, and was drawn by one horse; painted white and adorned by two red crosses on each side. It was kept in a livery barn. Was built in a small board and batten building on Westminster Road, now Kingsway, a few yards from Westminster Avenue, now Main Street. Mr. Lobb's daughter, Mrs. Ray Mercer, Chilliwack, wrote 1965:- "It was built by my father and his workmen." This, the only known photograph, was presented by Mrs. Mercer through Reuben Hamilton. It was "gooseneck" to allow turning in narrow places.

Volunteers Needed

Brewery Creek Historical Society, now defunct, passed along a Banker's Box full of historical documents and photographs. This collected Set will be the gathering place as I scan the material. I'm looking for other interested individuals to help create a sub-site here for the Mount Pleasant community

The goal is to gather, scan, and recreate a representation of Vancouver History for Mount Pleasant, Brewery Creek historical documents, photographs, and any available video. Combining Local Input with the professional researched and documented review by Luxton Associates for the City of Vancouver's Heritage Working Group, a comprehensive Internet Community will enrich a sense of history and ownership to the beautiful vibrancy of a city and people that have transformed and conquered what was once a wilderness to become the bustling metropolitan Vancouver we experience today. This is our Heritage, and our collective History.
